Sicily 9-19 October 2019
With Stefano Manfredi and Sue Jenkins
We are excited to announce that Stefano and I will be heading back to Sicily in 2019. This will be our third trip to Sicily with a completely new itinerary, exploring the rich culinary, cultural and artistic traditions of the south east of the island.
We have found a stunning villa near the Baroque town of Scicli, south of Modica and close to some glorious beaches such as Sampieri, Cava d’Aliga, Marina di Modica, Donnalucata and Marina di Ragusa.
Mushrooms, Truffles and Sourdough
The villa is a restored manor house with beautiful gardens and a heated saltwater pool. It has a spectacular kitchen where we’ll all cook together concentrating on local dishes, especially seafood and the many local autumn delicacies such as artichokes, porcini, wild mushrooms and truffles. Stefano will show us how to bake sourdough bread with the local yellow durum wheat flour as well as how to prepare the most delicious pizza.
Modica, Noto and Ragusa
We’ll explore the nearby Baroque cities like the Modica, Noto and Ragusa. In Modica we’ll have a private demonstration by one of the old master chocolate makers who’ll show us the method of ‘cold-working’ the famous chocolate of the city. We’ll have a chocolate tasting involving single origins followed by some of the best granita and pastries at Stefano’s favourite Caffè dell’Arte.
We’ll take a day trip to Ortigia to see the Caravaggio masterpiece “The Burial of St. Lucia” as well the beautiful Duomo. We’ll go for lunch in the local markets for some delicious street food.
Wine is always a big part of our tours and Stefano stocks the villa abundantly with local gems. As we drink each wine, he’ll explain the grape varieties, vinification, microclimate and history of each. Sicily’s wines have gained worldwide prominence the last few years as their quality and uniqueness has been discovered. We will visit one of the leading wineries near the town of Vittoria, a short drive from the villa, where we’ll be given a private tour of vineyards and winery as well as a comprehensive tasting.
Discover Sicily with Stefano and Sue
The itinerary is still being finalised by Stefano but we are also looking at gardens, a visit to a small coastal town that was the centre of the tuna fishery under Arab rule, picking wild saffron in the Iblea Mountains, a visit to an artisan cheese producer, local markets and of course small restaurants chosen by Stefano. All the while we will be searching for the best arancini, the best cannoli, the best ricotta, the best gelato and granita because Sicily has it all.
